Peg Baumgartel Violin Bow, Washington State, Early 2000s

Peg Baumgartel Violin Bow in an FX Tourte inspired model, Washington State, Early 2000s, 63 grams.

About Peg:

Ms. Baumgartel is an active bow maker, constructing fine bows for professional musicians, conservatory students, collectors, avid adult players, select dealers and major violin shops in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.

Peg Joanne Baumgartel received her initial training in the Los Angeles workshop of Paul Siefried, with whom she worked from November 1986 through June 1993. The emphasis of her work there was on bow repair and restoration. After leaving the employ of Mr. Siefried, she established her own bow workshop in L.A. Remaining active as a bow maker and restorer, Ms. Baumgartel relocated her workshop to Washington state in 2000 to be with her husband, Morgan Andersen, an internationally renowned bow maker. Because the demand for her bows has continulally increased, requiring her full attention and commitment, as of 2013 Ms. Baumgartel is now concentrating exclusively on bow making.

Ms. Baumgartel has been awarded Certificates of Merit in international bow making competitions from both the Concours de Paris and the Violin Society of America. She has greatly augmented her bow making skills through participation in the Oberlin Bow Making Workshops. As a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers, she regularly attends lectures and presentations by the world’s foremost bow experts. She continues to familiarize herself with the most current information on historical bows and the latest methods of repair and restoration.

Her technical illustrations are found in "Discovering Bows for The Double Bass", along with photos of her bow. She has written articles for "The Strad" and "Strings" magazines, is included in the 2001 “Strings Violin Owner’s Manual”, and is a contributor to "The Conservation, Restoration and Repair of Stringed Instruments and Their Bows".  She is included with other northwest bow makers in the April 2004 “Smithsonian” magazine article “Song of The Pernambuco”, by Russ Rymer.  Ms. Baumgartel is featured in a June 2003 article in “Ladies Home Journal”, and is listed in “The World of Women in Classical Music” by Dr. Anne K. Gray.

Ms. Baumgartel served on the Board of Governors of The American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers in the post of Secretary for the 2014 – 2016 term. She is a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers (AFVBM), the Violin Society of America (VSA), and the International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative (IPCI).
