Furse began his love for instrument making at the violin making school in Salt Lake City, Utah when it first opened. He later went on to work in Ontario, Canada under Otto Erdesz, whose work he closely follows. Lawrence has been making fine stringed instruments for over 41 years and follows after the models of Guarneri del Gesu, Maggini, Gasparo da Salo, and Matteo Goffriller.
