A superb cello bow made by Cody Kowalski in Alfter, Germany, 2021. It is 78 grams, with a resilient feel, yet supple for fine control of tone shading. Articulate, cheerful, powerful, and focused.
About Cody:
Cody Kowalski grew up in an artistic family on a small island near Port Townsend, Washington. At a young age, he revealed a natural adeptness for creating with his hands and, at the age of twelve, had the opportunity to visit bow maker Charles Espey, with whom he began learning wood working and jewelry making techniques. A year later, this informal learning experience developed into the project of making his first violin bow.
Cody continued to make bows under Espey’s guidance throughout his years of high school, after which he visited several bowmakers in France, the birthplace of the modern bow. With his trip to France, Cody was inspired with new ideas of design and playability. Since that time, he has continuously been looking for new ways to create beautiful and unique bows. Cody has now been working on his own for 8 years, making bows for professional musicians, as well as amateurs, all around the world. No matter who he makes a bow for, he always strives for the utmost quality.
METHOD:
Cody makes bows primarily on a commission basis. Each bow is made to the specific needs of the player. Weight, feel, sound is all slightly adjusted to fit the player. Although each bow is different, Cody works mainly in one style of playability, that of Tourte or Peccatte, but with a more modern feel.
