C.F. Schuster & Son Violin Ole Bull Guarneri Model, Saxony, Germany, 20th C

An exceptional model violin at its price point made in Saxony by

C. F. Schuster & Son based on the Ole Bull Guarneri Pattern.

The violin was made by the C. F. Schuster & Son firm near the area of Dresden and has the pine branch trademark for the company on the label.

The instrument was made at the turn of the 20th century and is in very good condition. The back is of nicely flamed maple formed in two pieces and has a medium-width flame. The ribs match the degree of flame to that of the back. The arching and graduation of the plates is spot on for Guarneri modeling, although the sound holes are more of a typical mid-period Guarneri rather than of the Ole Bull Guarneri. The spruce top plate has a consistent thickness and varnish is an oil type, and has antiquing work found during this period. The varnish, all done with brush work, is an amber orange/ brown all superimposed on a golden amber base coat.

The instrument professionally was set up with the best materials here in our workshop with Milo & Stamm Hamburg bridge, Bogaro & Clemente Tailgut, Wittner Tailpiece, and Pirastro Perpetual Strings.

The violin is in excellent condition.

The violin has great power with an even register throughout, and a bold focused sound. The instrument responds well even with a lighter touch in the bow. It is suitable for all styles of playing and has a soloistic voice that can also blend well in an ensemble.
